我国历史上最早出现的教师节是1931年。当时，教育界知名教授邰爽秋、程其保等联络京、沪教育界人士，拟定每年6月6日为教师节，并发表《教师节宣言》，提出改善教师待遇、保障教师工作、增进教师修养3项目标。这个教师节没有被当时的国民党政府承认，但在全国各地产生了一定影响。

鉴于“六·六”教师节是教师自发组织设立的，国民党政府没有承认，1939年，国民党政府教育部决定另立孔子诞辰日(8月27日)为教师节，并颁发了《教师节纪念暂行办法》，但当时未能在全国推行。

1951年，中华人民共和国教育部和中华全国总工会共同商定，将教师节与“五一”国际劳动节合并一起作为我国教师节。由于种种原因，教师节实际上并未实行。

为了发扬“尊师重教”的优良传统，提高教师地位，1985年1月21日，在第六届全国人大常委会第九次会议上正式通过国务院关于建立老师节的议案，确定每年9月10日为中国的教师节。从此以后，老师便有了自己的节日。
