化石能源的过度使用，是目前中国局地空气污染的罪魁祸首，也是导致全球气候变化最主要原因。中国正消耗着全球约一半的煤炭。2012年，因煤炭消费的一次PM2.5、二氧化硫和氮氧化物排放量分别占中国污染物排放总量的62%、93%和70% 。同时，政府间气候变化专门委员会(IPCC)于2014年年底发布第五次气候变化评估综合报告，进一步确认了温室气体排放以及其他人类活动是自20世纪中期以来观测到的气候变暖的主要原因，二氧化碳浓度已升至过去80万年以来前所未有的水平，而使用化石燃料是二氧化碳主要来源之一。

“WWF相信，大力发展可再生能源是解决国内严重空气污染和全球气候变化问题的终极方案。”卢思骋指出， “只有控制煤炭消费总量，转向以可再生能源为主导的能源结构，我们才能最终告别雾霾，拥抱蓝天。”
